Schadenfreude

I woke to a bloodthirsty morning
and read that the CIA watched it all in real-time;
someone even said that trained seals were involved.

The "Star-Spangled Banner" mingled with "We Are the Champions"
outside the White House; and frenzied students, unwilling to vote
in midterm elections, made the roads impassable:

Jet liners and electric chairs have the curious property
of turning victims into sadists, and the image that came to mind
was that of penitentiary on the night of an execution.

Vengeance, like laudanum, is equal parts sweetness and bitter.

It is easy to celebrate the death of a wicked man
but less pleasant to ask, unflinchingly:
What were the causes of his wickedness?

I imagined the following:
3,000 civilians in September
100,000 civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan
and 1 giant abacus in the sky.

The President told the nation, "Justice has been done."
