For Patti and Robert
[1]
Mosquito-bitten and starving;mid-March daydream of spring
unending. Wistful confidence,
neither regretful nor proud:
the apathy it took to get here.
[2]
I started drinking coffee
for the taste but stayed for
the caffeine. Veins pulsing
like the Ganges, I followed
it until it emptied iteself
one day in September.
[3]
I read it all in one day
racing as if to find some
magical revelation but when I
reached the final pages I found myself
skimming the words – ashamed of being a voyeur
disappointed by my envy – I realized no revelation
my life did not take on new meaning. The
book merely ended and I was one
day older. No closer
– or further –
from the truth
than I had ever been before.
